C.U.R.E. Intern Spotlight

Meet Kelsey

Hi everyone! My name is Kelsey and I’ll be interning with C.U.R.E. until December. I’m currently a Human Services student at Monroe Community College, in hopes of pursuing a further education/degree in Social Work. I found out about C.U.R.E. through a close family friend, Allivea, who is battling a brain tumor and her family has worked with C.U.R.E. This experience has made me decide to intern here for the semester and do everything I can to help out!

Spotlight on Aurora

If you listen to her mom, Crystal or her dad, Kyle, Aurora was a happy, playful one year old. She loved to play with her older brothers, Christopher and James. She also loves the outdoors and even like the game cornhole. Her mom describes her as a pretty easy going child who just loves to help with just about everything. She helps with cooking meals and even likes to help clean the house, although she is quite annoyed that her toy vacuum doesn't actually work. But other than that, she is a pretty happy little girl. Unfortunately for her family, that sweet, happy going girl was recently diagnosed with a form of leukemia called Blastic Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cell Neoplasm Leukemia. That is a mouth full to say, and an even more difficult thing to hear that because of that diagnosis, she will receive 2-5 years of treatment. Both mom and dad have been super supportive of Aurora, often taking turns being in the hospital while the other is at home with their two active boys. Being in the hospital, Aurora has completely charmed the staff who look forward to her stays, but also look forward to the day when she will get to finish her chemotherapy treatment and instead, get to see her at events like C.U.R.E.'s Survivors Day Picnic.

Let Me Tell You Who I Am
By Angela Miller
I am still a person like you, with a life like yours, yet not.  I am still a mother like you, yet not at all like you, all at the same time.  I wish there was some way you could understand me, without becoming who I am now. Read the full passage.

boosttutors.png

Are you looking for someone to help tutor your child?

Are you looking for someone to help tutor your child? C.U.R.E. Childhood Cancer Association works with Boost to provide supplementary tutoring for children with cancer and other chronic diseases, which may prevent normal educational development. The group of teachers at Boost Tutors, will not supplement the tutoring being provided by the school, but will act as a “boost” to a child by helping him/her better understand material being presented at the child’s grade level. The tutors use their teaching expertise to fill the gap left when traditional schooling is not possible. The group is currently in need of volunteer tutors, also. For more information please contact Adella Ivison, Program Coordinator for C.U.R.E. at 585-473-0180 or Adella.ivison@curekidscancer.com and she will make a referral.
