October 2021 Newsletter
C.U.R.E. has been here.
From the day of diagnosis, throughout treatment and beyond:
The support doesn’t stop when the treatment stops.
And we are so thankful for our friends who make our support possible.
A word from our Executive Director
Hi, Everyone!
Happy October! It’s so weird typing that. I can’t believe how quickly time flies. Even as I look at the photo to the right of our three sweet kiddos, it seems impossible our little Everett is already three months old! If you weren’t sure where I’ve been the past several months, this may come as a surprise! My family and I welcomed our third little love in July (almost four weeks earlier than expected!) and I have been savoring every moment with him. I’ve been so appreciative of the time with my family - our oldest started Kindergarten, our middle child started full time daycare (without his sister/side-kick/best friend!) and our family adjusted to being a family of five.
I cannot thank the Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteers enough for allowing me the space to care for my family and really practice what we preach here at C.U.R.E. We wholeheartedly believe that parents need to take care of themselves so they can best care for their children. I’m grateful those same values have been reflected to the Staff as well. I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to the Board, Staff and Volunteers for their hard work and for continuing to provide the meaningful support our families rely on. While it was beautiful spending time with my family, it is also great to be back in my office at 200 Westfall Road - a home I’ve known for 7 1/2 years.
I look forward to what we have in store - expanding programming, the holidays and much more!
Thank you, again. I hope to see you soon!
Spotlight on: Makenna
She is kind to everyone, creative, artistic and musical. Makenna plays clarinet, sings in chorus and was young Anna in school musical “Frozen Jr.” She’s a hard worker and never gives up!
In the hospital, she visits the teen room (bubble hockey and Bananagrams are her favorite), plays cards and other games, does diamond art, and has movie nights with popcorn. Grub Hub deliveries from interesting restaurants are also a favorite. She was also one of our featured “Tasters” in the Mac and Cheese Liquid Gold Challenge during September! Thanks for helping us spread awareness during September, Makenna!
Morton Fun Day
Our families enjoyed a great day with food, games, horseback riding (a first time for many!) and ending with a ride to the pumpkin patch and apple picking. Our friend Joan, her family and the congregation at Morton Baptist Church have donated their time and talents for over thirty years to give our families a wonderful fall, country experience.
October Parents’ Night
Unfortunately due to COVID issues, OFC Creations has cancelled this production. We are looking into an alternative and will keep you posted via email and Facebook. Stay tuned!
Get ready for some spooky fun!
Gilda’s Club has an event coming soon!
Join Gilda’s Club on Saturday October 23, from 12-2pm for their second annual Trunk or Treat at Gilda's Club. All pediatric oncology/hematology patients (and Survivors) and their siblings are invited to attend this spooky, fun event. They will have a costume contest, treats, games and more! Registration is required.

Conquer Cancer in Kids:
make childhood cancer research a priority:
We invite our families and supporters to join CNN’s Rene Marsh as she advocates to make childhood cancer research a priority! Sadly, Rene lost her two year old son, Blake, to brain cancer in April 2021. She is now working with CNN and childhood cancer awareness advocates to make a difference!

GRYT Health connects patients and caregivers to others with shared experience and to information relevant to their journey.
Through the GRYT app, we’ve created a platform for people affected by cancer to connect to others with similar experiences, and to tailored information that helps our users become more aware of options specific to their needs or diagnosis – empowering them to make choices that are right for them.
Our community of patients, survivors, medical professionals, researchers and advocates across all 50 states in the U.S. and in more than 100 countries worldwide have participated in almost 1,000,000 interactions to date, inspiring people to live according to their own standards.
Trust from our community is paramount to our success and something we take very seriously. We never share any of our users’ information without their explicit permission. Unlike other apps, GRYT is the first social community that is funded, built, and run by patients and caregivers where users communicate anonymously in real-time and each person is 100% in charge of what happens with their data.
Thank you, RDI Diamonds!
We continue to be appreciative of our friends at RDI Diamonds, especially the Sales Team! They selected our organization to donate money to during the month of August. Our friends pictured, Jordan & Dave, were the top Sales Earners for the month and presented Laurie with a donation!

Cut-It-Out Cookies!
A huge thank you to our friend Shawn at Cut-It-Out cookies who made these adorable smiley face and gold ribbon cookies in recognition of childhood cancer awareness month! These cookies were distributed to families in the hospital to bring smiles to their faces.
Shawn has done this the past few years to honor the memory of her friend, Michael Zappia, who passed away. What a beautiful way to remember your friend - by donating your cookies and thinking of our families! Thank you for keeping our families in your heart!
Thank You
to everyone who participated in our Flocking during September! What a fun way to spread awareness and surprise a friend with golden flamingos on their lawn!
And we cannot forget to thank our Golden Flamingo Ornithologist for keeping the flocks safe this Awareness Month!
Thank you
To Sean Fico and Vanessa Carroll, and the entire Pane Vino Team for planning and participating in the first ever the Cocktails for a Cause event to benefit C.U.R.E.
The evening was beautiful - both the venue and the generosity were overwhelming. We are gracious for your kindness.
