June 2024 Newsletter
Swifter, Higher, Stronger Together.
Our theme for 2024 is the Olympics!
The motto for the Olympics is “Swifter, Higher, Stronger Together”.
We are a local nonprofit. We can react quickly to meet the needs of our Families.
We aim to provide meaningful support and increase what is provided year after year.
The C.U.R.E. Family is stronger together - working with our Community to meet our Families’ needs and provide love and assistance where they are most needed.
The most important thing with the Olympics is to participate. It’s not necessarily the triumph, but the willingness and strive to work hard together!
Join our Team!
We are looking for interested candidates to join our C.U.R.E. Staff! The Part-Time Parent Advocate position would be working with our current Parent Advocate, Michelle, to ensure our Families are connected to resources and are supported. The position must be filled by the parent of a Long-Term Survivor.

Congratulations to Sammi Jo on celebrating one year as part of the C.U.R.E. Team! We are so happy to have you here. Your positivity is sunshine in our office and we love having you here. Thank you for teaching us all about being Swifties and sharing laughter and fun with us. You’ve elevated our events and we CAN’T WAIT to see what else you have in store. Your caring heart and compassionate demeanor are appreciated more than you know. Cheers to many many more years on our Staff!
Congratulations, Henry!
We are so excited to be celebrating our friend Henry’s End of Chemo! We were so excited to share his favorite snacks with him in celebration: Cadbury Eggs and Doritos! He was joined by his mom for the celebration and added his handprint to our Handprints of Hope Wall. Congratulations, Henry!
Spotlight on: Shay
Meet our Friend, Shay.
Shay, a.k.a. Shayster, is an amazing teenager with the biggest heart. He is a goofball who also speaks fluent sarcasm. Shay plays many different types of guitars and percussion instruments. When he is feeling good, he likes to ride his bike or draw!
Each year C.U.R.E. recognizes a person that works at Golisano Children’s Hospital that goes above and beyond supporting C.U.R.E. A person that despite how busy they are still finds the time to come over to the office to celebrate a child’s end of treatment bell ringing. Someone who shows up to support Families that have lost their children at our annual Remembrance or Brick laying ceremony. A person that includes us in the care of each child and definitely goes miles beyond what they are required to for each one of their patients.
This person is a true advocate of C.U.R.E., often sharing about how meaningful the support we provide is, participating in a video we created to share our mission and tell our story and has offered to create content to share widely about the importance of C.U.R.E. and our mission of helping pediatric oncology hematology patients.
Michelle knows this first-hand because she has experienced what it is like to have a child as the patient of this doctor. As a parent of a child going through cancer treatment, you are terrified to say the least, and to have a doctor you can trust with your child’s life who includes you in every step of the treatment plan and answers all of your hundreds of questions and spends as much time as he needs to with you as if he had no other patients to see, I’m not sure what else you can ask for. I really am thankful this was the person who we were lucky enough to have walking us through each step of his cancer journey, the good and the bad parts of it. Even when telling you not so great news if things didn’t go as we had hoped, you never really felt like you were getting bad news because of the way in which he tells you. You just feel like they are in it with you and right by your side. Michelle feels so fortunate that her son was able to get treatment from this provider, and we could give you a list of hundreds of other parents that have personally told Michelle how they don’t know what they would do without him, without the obvious care that he has for these kids and their families. Congratulations, Dr. Andolina, for being recognized as our 2024 Strong Partner!
We at C.U.R.E. are truly touched by the support of our community, especially our Volunteers. As you all know, we are a small office that strives to provide love and comfort to our Families as much as we can. We can only do this through the loving support of our Volunteer base, which we are immensely grateful for. While every act of kindness and compassion are appreciated, some have a way of touching our hearts more than we ever knew possible.
One of the best, and sometimes equally worst, parts of our jobs is getting to know the Families we support. We admire their strength and fortitude. We celebrate their good news and mourn their losses. It is such a rollercoaster experience, but we wouldn’t trade it for anything – knowing we have the privilege of getting to know these incredible people.
Our Families touch our hearts in a way we never knew possible, which is why this award – the C.U.R.E. Dedicated Family Award – is so meaningful, especially this year.
If an email or sign up gets emailed to our Volunteer base, this Family regularly signs up to help. Whether it is wrapping gifts at the holidays, putting together kits for our Families, creating gifts for our donors – they are on it! We enjoy having them come into the office to help, but even more, we love catching up with them and getting the latest updates in their lives - whether it’s about after-school sports or showing off their new crocs!
Members of this family have advocated for our organization and most importantly, for C.U.R.E. Kiddos on a number of occasions. Two of their children made and sold a craft to raise awareness of childhood cancer. Their grandmother hosted a square dance fundraiser and raised awareness within her network. They even coordinated having a childhood cancer awareness month float in their local town’s parade! We had several Families join them on the float – further connecting our Families with one another.
Meeting the needs of our Families can sometimes pose challenges depending on the economic environment we are in and the donations we are given. This Family has helped us tremendously with a newer initiative we’ve started – a snack cupboard on 7 North where our kiddos stay at the hospital. Because you never know when those steroid-induced cravings will kick in or when you receive news that warrants eating a pack of cookies or chips and salsa. We were so grateful when they came to deliver goodies for the snack cupboard this year, including Aurora’s Noodles.
When Aurora was admitted, she often wanted buttered noodles, which is something that is not readily available when they are most wanted. To fix this, we purchased microwavable bowls and pasta for our Families on 7 North so that they could enjoy them whenever they wanted. In honor of their sweet Aurora, her family hosted a food drive to collect donations for the snack cupboard, including Aurora’s noodles.
This Family carries on Aurora’s legacy in everything they do, and we are so honored that they choose to endlessly, support CURE in every way they can. It is our pleasure to recognize The Putney Family as our 2024 Dedicated Family of the Year.
It means so much to us when businesses in our community rally behind our cause and donate towards furthering our mission. We would not be here without their support and could not provide for our Families like we do without their commitment. It means so much more, however, when they become invested in our mission and advocate for the Families we serve. We love speaking about our mission and the work we do at C.U.R.E., but appreciate it so much more when we have attentive, caring listeners.
Our Dedicated Community Partners are FULL of attentive, caring listeners. Not only do the employees of this company dedicate time outside of the office to learn about our mission, they also participate and volunteer at our events. Whether it is stopping by our office in the morning to get a tour and learn about upcoming initiatives or braving the pouring rain at our 5k and Fun Walk to show our Families they are not alone, our dedicated community partners are there. The statements “We want to be more involved, we want to give back more” constantly fill our emails and post event wrap up discussions. Our Friends have joined us annually at our Survivors’ Day Picnic, bringing fun to our event and enhancing our theme. They’ve dressed up in costume, purchased games and activities to share with our Families and volunteered their time, all to show love to the Families we support. Again and again, letting our Families know they are not alone. providing more gas cards to our Families, covering the cost of our Volunteer tshirts for events and assembling special packs of items for parents that will be added to our Comfort Bags.
September is a pretty big deal in our office – as it is childhood cancer and sickle cell awareness month. This company jumped right in with the mission of spreading awareness throughout their network and highlighting the work we do here at C.U.R.E. They took it a step further, however, encouraging their partners to look into childhood cancer organizations in their communities to get involved with and learn more about.
Advocacy and awareness go a long way in a world that is muddled with so much information. We are honored that our Dedicated Community Partners have deemed our mission and the work we do worthy of their tireless support. To our Friends at RDI Diamonds, we are beyond grateful for you and cannot wait to see how our relationship continues to evolve, again, to let our Families know they are not alone. You are our 2024 Dedicated Community Partner Award Recipients.
The technical meaning of “Godfather” is a man who is influential or pioneering in a movement or organization. The religious meaning is someone who presents a child at baptism and promises to take responsibility for their religious education. When we in the office think of the term “Godfather”, many things come to mind. But don’t worry, we’ve strayed away from Marlon Brando and making offers that can’t be refused. A Godfather, to us, is someone to look to for guidance, someone who takes care of those around them and someone who may or may not provide an abundance of treats and food.
What many of you may not know is that C.U.R.E. has been graced with a Godfather for the past several years. In thinking of someone who gives wholeheartedly to a mission, our C.U.R.E. Godfather comes to mind. There have been countless occasions over the last several years where the C.U.R.E. Godfather has offered words of advice or been consulted on various topics and has most of the time offered useable wisdom with these topics. The thing about the C.U.R.E. Godfather, though, is that he has been a pioneer with our organization. The C.U.R.E. Godfather is a leader – not just instructing people to participate or engage, but doing so himself. He leads by example. Never shy to lend a hand, load a truck, stuff an Easter Egg or drive an hour and a half to an event. He has dedicated countless hours to bettering the lives of the children and Families we serve. In his words, it is always ‘for the kids’ and never about him.
The Godfather is influential in his community, utilizing and sharing his network to help further our mission and spread awareness in honor of the Little Fighters we work so hard to support. He has inspired those around him, encouraging participation and pushing us to constantly be better. As for the religious aspect of the C.U.R.E. Godfather, where would we be without this individual giving us an education during our Annual Door Decorating contest, including imagery of Mary and Jesus because, in his words, “Jesus is the reason for the season”.
It seems only fitting that the first ever C.U.R.E. Godfather award be given to the first ever C.U.R.E. Rookie of the Year Award recipient because we knew, even all those years ago, that he was going to influence our lives, warm our hearts and push us to continue the good work we do. It is truly our honor and privilege to acknowledge or C.U.R.E. Godfather for his tireless dedication to our entire organization – our Families, our volunteers and most notably our Staff. We are so very grateful to know you and work alongside you, Joe DiFabio. Thank you for your continued guidance and support.
The dedication displayed by two of our founders, John and Judi Sturge, has been the foundation for nearly 50 years of commitment to local Families who have a child with cancer. The unwavering advocacy to not only support these Families but also to ensure their needs were met is admirable. As volunteers and founders, they helped to build C.U.R.E. into an organization that touches the lives of nearly 800 Families annually. C.U.R.E. established the John and Judi Sturge Committed Volunteer award several years ago, as a way to recognize the work done by John and Judi Sturge but also as recognition of dedication being carried out by volunteers all these years later. The award is given to a Friend of C.U.R.E. Childhood Cancer Association who displays characteristics of compassion and kindness to our C.U.R.E. Kids and their Families all while committing him/herself to the cause and the mission of the organization. The recipient embodies C.U.R.E.’s mission and goes above and beyond for our Families, striving to truly make a difference in their lives. Our intent of this award is to show true appreciation for an individual or group that embodies the dedication and spirit of John and Judi.
The award recipients’ dedication stems from their own personal experiences with cancer. SHE dedicated herself to the oncology world at an early age through her work as a Bone Marrow Transplant Nurse – immersing herself in a world of both hardships and hope that accompany a bone marrow transplant. She brings a level of understanding to the pediatric oncology world that not many truly experience. If you’ve been to the Survivors’ Day Picnic, you’ve seen HIM proudly sporting his Survivor t-shirt in the photo with all the Survivors.
These award recipients are present at so many of our C.U.R.E. events. You may not always know they are there, as they oftentimes are hard at work capturing beautiful moments of our Families and participants behind the lens of their cameras. They are the perfect people for the job, too, because they bring smiles to so many faces (which also becomes convenient when they are taking photos. The phrase “Say cheese” is not needed).
They commit themselves wholly to the cause, reflecting awareness for childhood cancer in all aspects of their lives – whether it is on social media posts, attending events, or wearing childhood cancer awareness tshirts, hoodies or hats literally everywhere they go. They support children all over the world through their CURE Bears for Hope and Love program, but most notably here in the Rochester area.
This couple meets the needs of our Families, especially during the holidays, which is an incredibly stressful time in general, let alone for Families with sick kids. They come with an abundance of toys, games and activities that we then gift to our Families, alleviating the stressors of shopping and wrapping gifts (they also remember the fun character wrapping paper, too!).
We are delighted to award Lynne and Randy Stiefler with our 2024 John and Judi Sturge Committed Volunteer Award.

GRYT Health connects patients and caregivers to others with shared experience and to information relevant to their journey.
Through the GRYT app, we’ve created a platform for people affected by cancer to connect to others with similar experiences, and to tailored information that helps our users become more aware of options specific to their needs or diagnosis – empowering them to make choices that are right for them.
Our community of patients, survivors, medical professionals, researchers and advocates across all 50 states in the U.S. and in more than 100 countries worldwide have participated in almost 1,000,000 interactions to date, inspiring people to live according to their own standards.
Trust from our community is paramount to our success and something we take very seriously. We never share any of our users’ information without their explicit permission. Unlike other apps, GRYT is the first social community that is funded, built, and run by patients and caregivers where users communicate anonymously in real-time and each person is 100% in charge of what happens with their data.
