Catching Up With Our Interns:

We have been keeping busy at the C.U.R.E. office over the past month! We have been working hard on our penny drive and are motivated to reach our goal of $7,000! So far, we have raised over $2,600 just from one school, Fyle Elementary! We are very excited about our progress. We
have also been to a few schools to advocate for C.U.R.E. and to get the
students excited to raise money for families in need. We are confident that we will reach our goal.

It is exciting to help in any way that we can with some of C.U.R.E.’s upcoming events. We have assisted with Trivia Night on March 6th by creating 20 baskets for the silent auction. It will be a great event! We have also attended a Gilda’s Club event on February 17th which consisted of a cooking class, fun games, and crafts with kids! We had a great time being volunteers at the event and look forward to helping and participating in more C.U.R.E. events in the future.

We have also been doing Instagram takeovers every Wednesday and assisting in other social media posts as needed. It has been a fun learning experience being able to create content for C.U.R.E. We look forward to the next few months at C.U.R.E. and are ready to learn as much as we can!

Spotlight on: Jack

Jack was 6 years old when diagnosed with a brain tumor (pilocytic astrocytoma) at the base of his brain stem in May, 2018. At the time he and his family were living in Wiesbaden Germany, where his family was stationed in the Army. Later that summer, Jack and his family moved to their hometown of Rochester where they would have a strong support system of family and friends to tackle Jack’s 60 week treatment. That’s when C.U.R.E. came into his life and his treatment began at Golisano Children’s Hospital. By September 2018, Jack had lost the majority of his fine motor skills, walking or managing a flight of stairs became extremely difficult and his speech was challenged among many other things. In November 2018, he was fitted for a wheelchair. But his humor and determination gave everyone hope. His tumor was slow to react to the chemo, after 8 months it started to shrink! Slowly, Jack’s motor skills and speech started to come back, his family watched him do the things that 8 year old boys do, swim, play on the swings and even audition for a play! On November 21, 2019 Jack rung the bell of hope! He is back in school full time and living life to the fullest! In 2020 Jack was selected to be one of Golisano Children’s Hospital “Miracle Kids.” He is honored to forever have that title associated with his name.

“Jedi Jack” as he’s known, is an encyclopedia of all things Marvel and The Avengers. He and his brother love talking Star Wars and are looking forward to going to Disney’s Galexy’s Edge. Jack is a foodie who loves to try new things! He’ll tell you Thai and Indian food are his favorites. Water parks bring his so much joy, there is nothing he won’t try once! Through all his treatment, music played a big part of his healing process. He has memorized and can sing most Imagine Dragons songs. With hope to see them in concert one day. On March 7 & 8 he has a speaking part as “The Bookseller” in Beauty and the Beast Jr. and will soon begin guitar lessons as he aspires to be a singer / songwriter when he grows up.

His force is strong.

Support

boosttutors.png

Are you looking for someone to help tutor your child?

Are you looking for someone to help tutor your child? C.U.R.E. Childhood Cancer Association works with Boost to provide supplementary tutoring for children with cancer and other chronic diseases, which may prevent normal educational development. The group of teachers at Boost Tutors, will not supplement the tutoring being provided by the school, but will act as a “boost” to a child by helping him/her better understand material being presented at the child’s grade level. The tutors use their teaching expertise to fill the gap left when traditional schooling is not possible. The group is currently in need of volunteer tutors, also. For more information please contact Adella Ivison, Program Coordinator for C.U.R.E. at 585-473-0180 or Adella.ivison@curekidscancer.com and she will make a referral.
